A Sense Of Perspective #5

With my reviews on the way i thought i should show anyone interested as to where i stand. I believe a good way to do that would be to show you my own personal top five games/series’.

1) The Battlefield Series

image

I thought long and hard on what was my actual top five were, i had the five games but not an order. And despite my best efforts the Battlefield series came out on top.

Post battlefield 2 i haven’t completed any of the campaigns, and despite how much i love to hate it’s rival Call Of Duty. I find Battlefield’s campaign boring and laborious. And frequently found myself sighing, even during “intense” gunfights.

However there’s the inescapable and undeniable factor. The online. Apart from a little helicopter spawn killing problem in Bad Company 2 i found each game’s online to be challenging, immersive and most of all a lot of fun.

A little bit of information regarding me and Battlefield:
 - I’m not to shabby with a sniper, my best shot was probably 1 km+ away on a moving target.
 - I seem to be able to power up into awesome mode by singing the songs of Shakira. The most potent of which are “Beautiful Liar” and “Hips Don’t Lie”

2) The Elder Scrolls - Skyrim

image

Fist off i need to warn long time fans of the series to take this with a pinch of salt. I hate Oblivion! So much so that Dead or Alive Volleyball seems bearable in comparison. If i had to sum Oblivion it up with one word, “stale” seems viable.

Skyrim however has captured my heart, It’s a hairy chested epic! On paper, seeing a RPG with dragons looks pretty cliché, but with things like the Mass Effect and Fallout series’ in many peoples spotlight for oh so long, it just goes to show you how fantastic the supposed norn norm can be.

With some seasoned combat, delicious graphics and gameplay, and enough quests to sate anyones appetite. Skyrim is a RPG dream, even the negative things like glitches can be turned on their heads with some friend to friend gaming banter.

Skyrim is well deserving a high rating by almost any criteria, and having racked up well over a thousand hours through at least five different saves, (and still not completed any of them) i can vouch for Skyrim, and hope it lives on in the hearts of all avid gamers.

3) Halo series

image

I was brought into the halo verse by some friends while i was still a PS2 player. I was responsible for occupying the player four spot in 2v2 matches on Halo 2, i was unfamiliar with the game and uncomfortable with a new controller that was essentially alien to me. Add that to the unfortunate case of “accidentally” reversed y-axis, and you can understand why my opinion of the game wasn’t that positive.

however after a string of good behavior, good grades, or something. I was bought a shiny new Xbox, and Halo 3 was part of the bundle. i immediately fell in love with the damn thing. Everything about it was better than I’d ever experienced before. Its graphics were gorgeous, its gameplay was intuitive and its story compelling.

At 14 years old, i cast away my PS2 and went through a gaming version of the Spartan-II program right there on my sofa. A few months after and i then experienced the magic of Xbox live. Co-op and custom games set me along a path to shoot better and drive faster than ever before.

I want to stress that i wasn’t blinded by it being my first online game on the Xbox, its online was fast paced, and as structured as it was varied. And after now playing all the halo games i can’t understand why i didn’t get into them sooner. With the ODST game in particular being one of the most memorable segments in my gaming life.

4) Devil May Cry

image

I imagine ranking Devil May Cry at #4 was as hard for me as Mr. Bean trying to get a SSS rating with a teacup. Giving it to Mr. Riddick or the esteemed devil hunter Dante himself, I’m sure they’d manage. Just as i will have to with this heart breaking decision.

Ask anyone i know and they’ll tell you I’m a pretty cocky character, but i cant hold a candle to the half man, half demon, all awesome Dante. Through each game I’ve been memorized by awesomeness. And I’ve felt pretty good with myself being a part of it: stylishly slashing and shooting my way to a triple S time and time and time again.

Apart from some questionable voice acting (I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with liiiiiiiiiiiight!!!) (Reuben Langdon excluded) and admittedly i can get a bit repetitive. Devil may cry is a brilliant series with the special edition Devil May Cry 3 being my favorite. And I’d recommend it to anyone seeking a change from a RPG or FPS.

5) Several Armored Core Titles

image

This is probably my least “mainstream” of my top five that satisfies the hipster that lays deep within my psyche. I adore the Armored Core series and have played many of the titles. I was getting frustrated over that damned nine-ball at around about the same time Tom and Jerry was one of Cartoon Network’s regulars. It served as the antidote to Armored Core’s tedious but equally awesome mechanized gameplay.

Despite 4 and more prominently, For Answer’s controversy. Armored Core: For Answer was the one i found most accessible (I haven’t played ACV, looks good though). And i racked up a ridiculous number of hours customizing and honing my favorite AC to laser blade perfection.

It stands at the lowest of the to five for the simple reason: the series is incredibly flawed. But a true Armored Core fan is well aware of this, and pushes past it to live the dream of being a mech pilot. And to kick giant metal ass!
